Akua – “Told You So”

Canadian native A K U A (Ah-coo-ah) blew me away when I happened upon her music today. I did not know what I was in for when my mouse hovered over the play button. My trackpad felt the weight of my index and my ears heard the weight of “Told You So.” The track has a very interesting sound, managing to be ethereal, hard, and loose, it occupies several different states in its three and a half minute run time.

The beginning of the track reminded me of Jimi Hendrix’s “Purple Haze” as it seemed to employ a similar off-beat introduction that was unnerving and intriguing all at the same time. Add tribal percussion paired with a subtly shifting clear synth and you are suddenly lulled into a misplaced sense of dreamy calm. Then all cuts out save for A K U A’s haunting vocals, masterfully introducing a sense of urgency to the music, building on the motif of warning present throughout the track Hard drums and a shaking, at times jarring,  bass find their way into the composition and fortify the walls of A K U A’s unique vision.

Following the likes of Little Dragon, A K U A’s work is an interesting and enchanting appropriation of jazz, experimental soul, and modern production and electronics. You can find the rest of her EP on soundcloud and you can find me listening to it on repeat.
